P-FLASH aims to help public health professionals:
•  Describe how the professional knowledge and skills of public health professionals can be applied to post-disaster settings.

•  Identify effective mental health assessment methods for individuals exposed to disasters and other major traumas.

•  Differentiate normal from pathological responses, directing individuals to appropriate interventions.

•  Identify predictors of psychopathology versus resilience following disasters.

The P-FLASH curriculum was developed by Carol North, M.D., University of Texas SW Medical School; Betty Pfefferbaum, M.D., University of Oklahoma School of Medicine; and Barry Hong, Washington University, St. Louis; nationally known experts in the field of trauma. P-FLASH is unique in its foundation on findings from the disaster mental health research literature, drawing its content directly based on empirical data. Its interventional approach is logical and practical, assuming core mental health competencies among trainees, and guiding them through the material to help focus their knowledge and sharpen their skills specifically for disaster settings. It is an applicable, eclectic collection of user-friendly information directed toward mental health intervention in logical steps, allowing a mental health professional to differentiate normative and pathological responses; provide decision trees for the evaluation, identification, and triage of cases, and impart front-line disaster mental health management skills. P-FLASH presents the material in a user-friendly format with animated slides and accompanying handouts, with additional material in appendices.
