[1] Public Health Response to Urgent Case Reports- Health Affairs (08/30/05)
This paper evaluates how local public health agencies respond to urgent case reports based on the standard set by the Centers for Disease Control. The ability of a local public health agency varies, and improving their performance is vital for public health preparedness for a disease outbreak or bioterrorism.

[2] Mainstreaming Disaster Preparedness training for fisherman inaugurated- Newindpress.com (09/06/05)
In the coastal Indian city of Visakhapatnam, the District Fisherman Youth Welfare Association has created a training program for disaster preparedness. The District Fisherman Youth Welfare Association will work with the Cyclone Warning Center to develop contingency plans at the village level and training village youth in disaster response. Trained local fisherman could then help during an emergency and with recovery efforts.

[3] U.S. dispatches disease hunters, health recruits to New Orleans- Bloomberg (09/09/05) Health officials on the federal, state, and local level have set up Kindred Hospital in New Orleans as a Federal Medical Rescue Center. Kindred will serve as a command center for officials to monitor disease outbreaks and to treat rescue workers. They face the challenge of rebuilding the city's health care system and averting disease outbreaks.

[4] Cuba's storm preparedness seen as essential to national security,economy- SunSentinel (09/09/05)
In Cuba, disaster preparedness is a national priority. The country holds annual drills for hurricane evacuation that includes the military and emergency workers. Cuban residents do not ignore evacuation orders and are given timely warnings about storms.

[5] NIEHS awards $37 million to train emergency and hazardous waste workers- Press Release (09/13/05)
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences has awarded $37 million in grant funds to be used in the training of emergency response and hazardous waste workers. The training will focus on how to protect the workers, their communities, and the environment from any exposure to toxic materials. The five training programs are the Hazmat Disaster Preparedness, the Hazardous Waster Worker, the Department of Energy Nuclear Weapons Cleanup, the Minority Worker, and the Brownfield Minority Worker training program.

[1] Medical, Psychological and Environmental Surveillance Needs for Workers Involved in Incident Response under the National Response Plan
(THE NEW JERSEY CENTER FOR PUBLIC HEALTH PREPAREDNESS AT UMDNJ and the JOHNS HOPKINS CENTER FOR PUBLIC HEALTH PREPAREDNESS)

WHEN: Tuesday September 27th & Wednesday September 28th

WHERE: The East Brunswick Hilton, East Brunswick, NJ

WHAT: A 2-day workshop involving nationally recognized experts in the areas of medical surveillance, environmental monitoring, and worker training -- drawing from academia, labor, industry, government, and the military. The conference will consist of panel presentations from experts who have been involved in developing and implementing surveillance programs following disasters, addressing:
* post-disaster surveillance
* integration of exposure assessment into medical surveillance and evaluation
* critical factors in implementing surveillance programs
* pre- and post-disaster planning, training, surveillance and risk communication needs for first responders, first receivers, skilled support personnel, and related workforces

COST: free; lunch and dinner reception included

[1] RX for Survival: A Global Health Challenge is a six-part series that will air on PBS beginning November 1, 2005.
The program will cover the history of public health, modern medicine, public health preparedness, vector-borne diseases, nutrition, and the challenges in providing medicine and public health nationally and globally. For more information:

[2] Voluntary Accreditation System for State and Local Public Health Agencies. The National Association of County and City Health Officials
(NACCHO) and Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) have announced formal efforts to write "definitive recommendations" for a voluntary accreditation system for state and local public health agencies.

[3] NJ Medical Reserve Corps looking for volunteers
The New Jersey Medical Reserve Corps launches a new website to sign up volunteers. Individuals interested in
