I. PREPAREDNESS NEWS:
[1] Police chiefs moving to share terror data- The New York Times
(07/29/05)
Police chiefs in the US and beyond will work together to share intelligence
information. While they acknowledge that the information they receive
from the FBI and the federal Department of Homeland Security is generally
good, they complain that it often arrives too late to be of use. Los Angeles
police chief, William Bratton, is working with other chiefs to build a
network of 10 to 15 police departments across the US and Canada to enable
the rapid sharing of data on terrorist threats and actions. Eventually,
they hope to incorporate police departments in Europe, the Middle East
and Asia.

[2] Cities fret over how to quickly deliver vaccines - USA Today
(08/01/05)
Experts are concerned that despite adequate stockpiles of emergency medications,
cities will be unable to distribute them to the population in the time
necessary to control an outbreak.

[3] NY Academy of Medicine will work to improve terror preparedness
plans.
The NY Academy of Medicine Center for the Advancement of Collaborative
Strategies in Health study released last fall revealed that plans to protect
people from smallpox and dirty bombs may not be effective. The Academy,
with funding from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, will work closely with
residents, officials, schools and businesses in four communities across
the country to identify improved terror preparedness strategies that builds
on ³...the common-sense knowledge of the American people and their
strong interest in contributing that knowledge to community and organizational
planning.² http://www.cacsh.org/eptpp.html
[4] Kids learn disaster preparedness - HonoluluAdvertiser.com
Hawaiian civil defense officials scale down the 25-hour CERT training
for 9 and 10 year-olds. "Children grow up fast, and we could have
a 10-year-old taking the course today who will remember something that
may help them in a few years," said Atina Pascua, director of the
University of Hawaii's Service Learning Program.

[5] Vaccine Alone Won't Stem Avian Flu, Experts Warn - The New
York Times (08/8/05)
Officials announce the successful test of a vaccine against avian influenza
but caution that the control of a pandemic depends on having adequate
stockpiles and the ability of public health systems to rapidly distribute
the vaccine to those who need it.
